Game Report by Soccer United: Game Report by Brown Benefits:
Brown's Benefits 6 vs. Soccer United 0. Without top scorer Mike "Mr. D " Bertoia, Soccer United was going to be in tough against Brown's with 1st place on the line. Brown's started strong, but United had its best chance foiled when Vinicio Delgado's sure goal header was saved by Brown's keeper. Soccer United's evening became more challenging when 2nd top scorer Axel Merckx tweaked his hamstring at the 30 minute mark and left the game early in the 2nd half. Down 2-0 after 45, United seemed in good spirits until a 10 minute lapse resulted in 3 goals against. To their credit, they didn't give up and played hard, creating some chances throughout the rest of the game. However, United's shortenened bench was no match against Brown's depth, as they rotated all 18 players throughout the game. While the score may not have been indicitive of the game, without question, the better team won on this night.
The battle of the top two teams turned into a one-sided affair as Brown Benefits cruised past Soccer Untied 6-0.
The Browns came out of the blocks early and generated several scoring chances but failed to hit the target. To United’s credit, they absorbed the pressure and forced Brown’s keeper Gord Regan into a spectacular diving save on a counter attack. Don Brown opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Steve Fagan was fouled in the box. Keeper Chris Turbitt stopped Brown’s initial shot but Brown slotted the rebound into the bottom corner. Steven Heiss doubled the advantage soon after when he bundled the ball, along with himself and two defenders, into the net from a Larry Kinakin cross. After the break, Tony Gonzales turned in a man of the match performance, scoring a goal and assisting two others in a 10-minute spell. First, he set up Jim Kruiper, who fired and great shot into the bottom corner, and then set up Tim Austen to send his strike into the other corner. Gonzales then added one of his own from a breakaway to increase the lead to five. Austen added one more to complete the scoring as the skies opened up and drenched the players but not the Browns’ spirits!
